Summer is around the corner folks. SUMMER!
That little bit of promised land, an oasis of …. oh, no, wait. We’re in the UK. It’ll probably rain. But that’s okay. The plants will be happy.
If it’s not raining, however, one of those quintessential things about summer parenting is taking the kids cycling – but who wants to be running in two directions after two children on bikes? Much better to cycle with them, steering them in a general direction!
Isn't Orla pretty? Just add a straw hat, because, come on, it just needs a straw hat!
YOU CAN WIN ORLA So here is a little about her.....
Just notice and love the detail of this bike. See the stitching on the handle? The saddle has the same stitching. We also love that the basket’s cover is removable so that it can be cleaned. The wicker basket has a really easy release mechanism. Just push the red button and the basket comes off, but once clicked in place it’s really sturdy too. The basket itself has a handle so you can fill it with your picnic goodies and once you’ve stopped for lunch, slip off the basket, carry it by the handle and you’re on your way. Use it for your allotment produce too, and if it gets too dirty you can just wipe it clean, or slip it off to give it a proper clean. And don’t forget the back pannier too, if you need more space.
The wheels have mudguards over them, so you can keep relatively clean on wet and muddy roads, and the frame is a light alloy, so you can easily pick the bike up – it’s big but not heavy. If you’ve ever ridden a bike, you know that the first few days are painful on your backside. That didn’t happen at all on this bike, because the saddle is wide and padded. It’s really very comfortable and no sore bum the next day. Awesome. The seat is also adjustable height.
If not there is more to tempt you and oodles of reasons to get involved to WIN this amazing prize.

The gift that gives back
Ruby & Bo design and create plantable cards and eco-friendly gifts using biodegradable materials sourced sustainably and locally. When you buy a Ruby & Bo product, you are not only supporting the endangered craft of papermaking in this country, you are also protecting our bees and helping us to plant more trees!
Founded in 2019 by Victoria, a merchandiser and part-time artist, and Rob, a graphic designer by trade, Ruby & Bo was named after their two small children.
Horrified with the waste generated by the greeting card industry, the pair decided to develop an eco-friendly alternative using wildflower seeds.. the result, 100% compostable cards with a purpose!
Initially launching with a range of plantable greeting cards and seed paper shapes, the two have ventured further into the world of eco-friendly stationery with a growing (no pun intended!) range of plantable notebooks, wrapping paper, recycled ribbon and paper tape.
Ruby & Bo proudly operate a 100% sustainable business, using truly ‘green’ materials and post-consumer waste wherever possible. The company is carbon positive reinvesting a portion of their profits in environmental schemes, such as tree planting.
In fact, with the help of Ecologi and the Eden Reforestation Project, they have planted over 24,000 trees so far!
Every month Ruby & Bo invest with Ecologi and they use the money to fund eco-projects across the globe.
Plant within 18 months
It is best to plant all of our seed paper products within 18 months. After this time the paper will still sprout, but the germination rate will begin to decline. In addition, try and store your plantable paper products in dry and cool conditions, as heat and humidity can also affect the viability of the seeds.
Soak the paper before planting
The paper will germinate planted dry and followed with a good water, but alternatively, you can hold the paper under a cold tap for a few seconds before planting to ensure the seeds get off to a good start!
Water regularly
The paper needs to be kept moist until the seeds have germinated. This softens the paper and helps the tiny seedlings break through. Do not make the mistake of 'over-watering' them though, the paper should be damp, not swimming!
Do not plant the paper too deep
The paper needs to be covered with a thin layer of soil - approx 5mm. If planted too deep the seeds may remain dormant.
Plant in a pot
Start the seedlings in a pot and only transfer outside (or re-pot inside) when they are fully established.
Good things come to those who wait :)
Our wildflower paper contains a mix of both annual and perennial species. If planted early in the Spring, the annual species will bloom later the same year. If the paper is planted later in the season, the annuals will not bloom until the following year. The majority of the seeds we use are perennials and these will not flower until the year after they have been planted. Be patient if you can only see green for what seems like ages, there is no rushing Mother Nature and the flowers will bloom eventually.
We are celebrating our first birthday and have a BUY ONE GET ONE HALF PRICE offer for you all.
Debenham's Ruby and the Angel ECO is giving Velvet readers the chance to win the ultimate greener-living gift: a hamperful of home and pamper products.
As part of our greener living special, Debenham’s Ruby and the Angel ECO - one of Velvets favourite planet-positive shopping destinations - is giving Velvet readers the chance to win a whole hamperful of eco-friendly home and pamper products, worth more than £250!
Sister to the village’s much-loved Ruby and the Angel gift shop, which sits on the opposite side of the High Street, the ECO store launched last year to provide shoppers with environmentally-sensitive, ethically-sourced merchandise for him, her and the home. Focusing on products which tick all the eco and ethical boxes - vegan, organic, natural, plastic-free, fairly-traded - the shop also has a ‘reduce, reuse, recycle’ ethos, with numerous items either available as refills or made from recycled materials.
“As a business we are committed to reducing the use of single plastic and are trying very hard to be more environmentally focused and protect the planet where we can,” says Tammy King, owner of Ruby and the Angel ranked one of Britain’s Best Small Shops in 2020.
“Our customers are becoming more eco-conscious too, and so extending our product-base to include more eco-friendly items is a natural progression,” she adds. “Our planet-loving range offers beautiful, high-quality products for your interiors, your personal care and well-being, and as gorgeous gift ideas.”
Worth an amazing £255 in total, the Velvet prize hamper contains: a Weaver Green throw (£50); Jungle Culture reusable makeup remover pads (£15.99); Studio Wald plant pot covers (large: £12.99, small: £7.99) and flower press (£14.99); two bars of Dirty Cow plant-based chocolate (£8.50); a Milly and Sissy hand wash set (£16); Upcircle body scrub (£19.99) and body cream (£28.99); Sakrid organic face wash (£17.99) and face moisturiser (£22.99); Huski travel cup (£13.99) and lunchbox (£17.99); and a set of Wild and Stone plastic-free hairbands (£6.99).
Ruby and the Angel are stepping out to help raise money for our charity partner The Debenham Project
Tammy, owner of Ruby and the Angel and Ruby and the Angel ECO is stepping out to take part in the Thames Path Challenge in September 2022.
This is a challenge that Tammy has wanted to be part of for a few years and this year, after deciding to go all out and sign up for the 100km she has eventually signed up for the 22km!!! Tammy will be taking up the challenge along England’s greatest river which will provide a fantastic backdrop for an unforgettable adventure to celebrate her birthday.
Next year she hopes to do the 50km ( a bit more training needed!) and then maybe year 3 the 100km...keep watching!
Debenham, a delightful Suffolk village has been incredible good to Tammy, personally and professionally. It is home to her business, which has thrived due to the local support shown to her. Her children have grown up and been educated in the village. At the heart of this amazing community is a charity called The Debenham Project, who are doing outstanding work supporting the carers of Dementia sufferers. Ruby and the Angel commits each year to raising funds for this incredible charity and so Tammy would love to be able to give any donations you give her in this challenge directly to them.
The team at Ruby and the Angel hope you can help Tammy....any donations, big or small will all make a huge difference to the work they do. Please, if you can, dig deep, search behind the sofa, in your handbags or change pot and give what you can.
